2008 Subaru Outback: Long-Term Update 2

By admin | January 1, 2009

Now it’s eight months later, and we’ve definitely lived in the Outback for better or for worse.

2 won’tbe too far down the road we either need to get a minivan, a largercrossover or a roof-mounted cargo carrier.

That’s our 33.5 cubic feet of cargo area filledwith suitcases, Black Friday shopping and an umbrella stroller.

While we have put under 7,000 miles on it, they are mostly hard-driven city miles of my wife commuting to work.

We drove cross country last year with the help of a Thule Atlantis 1600 box on our roof rack.

The car is eager to turn in, and if you coax it even slightly the tail will pop out slightly.

We need a bigger car.

I autocrossed this car for a few years, and the only drivers I feared were the fastest Evo and STi drivers.

The two improvements I would make to the car are to add heated seats/windows/mirrors, and a bit of horsepower…

I can eek out 30MPG mixed with this car.

an extra 20 or 30 would go a...

My View: Courtesy will go a long way on Parkway trail

By admin |

This tends to set up a roadblock for a biker turning a blind corner. There have been countless times when I have been atop a bicycle, traveling at reasonable speeds (if fast by pedestrian standards) and have encountered the aforementioned roadblock.

But that’s a personal choice and so not my concern. What is concerning me is that there appears to be an unwritten rule on the Parkway trail perhaps there is a secret memo out there somewhere?

And, frankly, either I’m the one slamming on my brakes and being propelled through the air in cartoonlike fashion, or I’m barreling into your Sunday baby boot camp stroller team. Please, someone help explain to me why this has become an accepted rule of the trail.I’m not trying to be a condescending jerky biker.

When I do, I feel much safer walking along the far right side of the trail, and listening for the requisite On your left!

If there is another biker on the appropriate side of the path, and me on my side...

Three of my grown children live here.

All those shots went into those two men.Beasley has lived in Pahrump for three years and works at Saddle West casino.

There were 20 shots fired and the sound just goes through you, said Grandma Beasley.

pop, pop, pop.

We have all moved here one by one.She said she learned one lesson on Black Friday that she will never forget: Never, never, never again will I get separated from my family when we are shopping. If you are shopping with young children, just have patience and go with them.

My daughter told the police she had to go get something for the baby to eat, said Beasley.Eventually the long...

NEW PALTZ They came, a goose-fleshed throng, sporting funny hats and pushing three-wheeled baby strollers, bouncing on their heels, warming up, chilling out, chatting with their friends, treating their coffee cups like so many hand-warmers.

and while the rest of the world lingered under its quilts and coverlets, more than a thousand bright-eyed runners moms, dads and kids started their Thanksgiving holiday early at the annual New Paltz 5K Turkey Trot. The kids were first off the starting line.

Andie and her mom, Karen, were among the top 10 finishers.

Afterwards, Andie, who was dressed as a turkey, shook hands with an inquiring reporter and gave a convincing gobble at the finish line.Other kids, such as another near-3-year-old, Luci Riccione of Rochester, were far less enthusiastic about running with a pack of wild-eyed future marathoners.Russ Raffa’s son Bode sat out the kids’ race this year, preferring to cover the race’s entire course in the comfort...

By admin | December 9, 2008

Crista Coppola has a Ph.D.

in animal sciences, but she doesn’t train animals. The Tucson animal behaviorist tells people how to set their dogs up for success.

She is giving classes on Dec.

13 at Horizon Park in Scottsdale.

Coppola’s work focuses on improving adoption success of shelter dogs by reducing their stress levels. The nationally known expert was called in to evaluate the dogs of convicted dogfight impresario and NFL footballer Michael Vick, and she found them fairly friendly.

But Coppola warns that unless you understand your animal, even a docile pet can act badly. It’s hard to understand your dog’s behavior if you don’t know your dog very well, Coppola said. Her Scottsdale classes will cover two areas of concern: introducing a new baby to the dog, and dog-park behavior.People don’t realize how long it takes to make your dog or cat comfortable with a baby.

The worst time to start is after the baby has arrived, when the...

BYOB - Bring Your Own Baby - to the movie theater

By admin |

Someone who is the parent of a young child and even someone who isnt knows that, as a rule, movies and babies can be a problematic combination.

For the parent of a young child, going to see a movie means either finding a babysitter or taking the little one along to the theater and hoping for the best. The latter option can be a volatile proposition, one that might end up involving a lot of wailing and some angry stares in the parents direction.

The AmStar 14 on Civic Center Boulevard in Anderson has come up with a solution. Each Tuesday, parents and caretakers of young children can now take advantage of the Bring Your Own Baby matinee program.

AmStar 14 is owned by New Orleans-based Southern Theatres, which operates 18 movie theaters in nine states. Southern Theatres Marketing Coordinator Buffy Bye said the company first tried BYOB as a pilot program in six of its theaters several weeks ago.

According to Bye, it was not only well-received in...
