I remember reading political thrillers under the covers with a flashlight as one of the high points of my summer camp experience–the perils of car chases pushing aside at least temporarily the perils of mosquito bites.
I always approached my required summer reading books with the question, Why are these books so important that our teachers would ask us to devote part of our vacation to reading them?So with the thought of Why are these books so important?
I offer some suggestions for young readers that explore human rights and nonviolence.
These are not heavy or arduous books to read, by the way.
In fact, all are beautifully illustrated titles for elementary and middle school age readers that can be appreciated for their visual quality, read straight through, or sampled in small bites.s (Frances Lincoln, 2008) combines this simplified Declaration with illustrations by acclaimed and emerging artists from around the world.
The book begins with award-winning British...

We had often heard the new president suggest to parents that they turn off the TV and read to your child.
Rachel Altmann, one of MCLs library outreach specialists, offers childcare providers a series of five visits, where she models storytime in their homes or classrooms.
She provides adults with information on early literacy on her first visit, along with a checklist, What Makes a Great Storytime, that they refer to as they observe her reading with their kids.
The beauty of modeling, Altmann says, is that adults see me do it, not just talk about doing it.
Altmann had been talking about the importance of involving the children in the read-aloud process.
said the teacher as the children actively participated in the actions with Altmann.
Ive only ever just read that book to them!Modeling is the centerpiece of many of MCLS parent services, too.

In 1934, John Dillinger was famously shot dead coming out of a gangster movie..
Perhaps sensing the obvious irony, director Michael Mann’s vision of Dillinger resembles Gable’s smooth gentlemanly rep.
(Christian Bale) to lead the Dillinger manhunt.
One that would eventually end at a movie theater.
The film fails to capture why Dillinger is such a known figure, treating him as just a slippery criminal giving G-Men a hard time.’
Yes, chalk this up to another round of Christian Bale roped in by lazy typecasting.
He will give you a perfectly operational but unmotivated performance., giving the film a near-western feel.
Fitting, given its taste for big gun battles.) and also meticulously executed, with Mann shooting much of it in actual historical locations around Wisconsinbut it’s a cold, cold film.
It has no high or low points, just assured moment-to-moment progression, mirroring Dillinger’s own crime spree.
And the movie ends.

But their white chocolate brownie, their most popular dessert on the menu, isnt the only top item in their repertoire.
Their proud White Chocolate Grills standing tall in Arizona, Colorado and Illinois swim in a sea of sweet success.
Cooking is more in the background with my partners saying, Hey conceptualize the food, and then we let the chefs get on planning the rest of the way.: White Chocolate Grill reflects the way I eat at home and the same goes for my partners families; which is rare.
Simple tastes focused on an American menu.
I am happiest with value-ful (high value and flavorful food).
We make it with extremely high flavor using the marinade.
A rotisserie chicken crepe offered at $13 and the roasted chicken enchiladas tested on Cinco de Mayo got tremendous feedback so we moved it to the regular menu.
We do high taste profile foods and not eat with our hands...

. But soon you realize that the real problem is not only getting pregnant but staying pregnant– that is, 1) avoiding miscarriage and 2) having a pregnancy that the mother won’t choose to abort.
Read on:Most medical experts agree that embryo screening can significantly reduce the risk of serious chromosome-related illnesses, such as Down syndrome.
The Journal account doesn’t quite explain who faces the risks of illness– it would be impolite to talk about the baby, at a time when the mother still might decide not to continue the pregnancy– but of course it’s the embryo. For women, embryo screening has offered two benefits: it helps them determine whether they will be able to continue the pregnancy, and whether they want to continue the pregnancy.
For embryos, the procedure never offered any benefits at all.
The risk of contracting a chromosome disorder that will cause miscarriage.
The risk of contracting Down syndrome, which will cause...

After taking his trash to the curb one morning and realizing it was filled with diapers from his two children, Siminoff came to the conclusion that his neighbors probably were also contributing mass quantities of diapers to landfills.Siminoff and his former high school classmates began a trial program last September in Sunnyvale, delivering and composting preordered diapers to and from 25 households once a week. The company publicly launched in December with a customer base of more than 250 families in the South Bay and Santa Cruz. It’s really exciting to be doing something that nobody else is doing, says Karen Nelson, who works at the small company. Each month EarthBaby delivers preordered diapers and other selected products to customers’ doorsteps and hauls away used diapers to a company where materials are composted using an accelerated 14-week industrial composting process. It looks and smells and feels like dirt, Siminoff said.resulting in a sanitary topsoil which is...
